Formerly called Santa Fé de Bogotá, is the capital and largest city in Colombia. It is also the capital of the department of Cundinamarca. It was founded in 1538 by Jiménez de Quesada and was the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Granada until independence. Bogotá has about 8.5 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area, making it the fourth most populous city in South America, surpassed only by São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires.
